Now even the British Museum goes by the preferred Greek form — Parthenon Sculptures. For many, Parthenon Sculptures are its most striking example. They were shipped to Britain and eventually joined the British Museum's collection in 1816 — five years before the uprising that created an independent Greece. The British Museum says the sculptures were acquired legally and form an integral part of its display of the world's cultural history. That would add pressure on the British Museum, while U.K. public opinion is seen as increasingly backing the Greek demand.

Greece has repeatedly asked for their permanent return to Athens, while Britain and the museum have refused to do so. They were transported to Britain and bought by the British Museum in 1816, and are exhibited as a prized part of its collection in London. The sculptures at the British Museum make up about half of a 160-metre frieze which adorned the Parthenon temple on the rocky Acropolis hill in Athens. The trustees have said they would consider a loan to Greece if Greece acknowledges the British Museum's ownership of the sculptures, which Greek governments have refused in the past. The British Museum in January 2023 called for a new Parthenon Partnership with Greece and said discussions were ongoing.

Opinion: Marjorie Taylor Greene botches the explanation

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. CNN —On the day after Republicans lost pivotal races in Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia last week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene offered a diagnosis for her party’s ills. On Tuesday, Ohio voters passed an amendment to the state constitution that guarantees abortion rights. The disconnect may or may not cost Trump votes in 2024, but it’s hurting Republicans up and down the ballot. “Democrats will win in 2024 by making the election a choice, not just a referendum on Biden’s performance in office.

Opinion: Why I’m not going to have children
  + stars: | 2023-11-11 | by ( Opinion Anna Lee | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
But each day, the current state of the world dissuades me more and more from having children. Like many folks in Gen Z (those born between 1997 and 2012), my main concern is climate change. As environmental catastrophes reach a caliber we cannot predict or conceive, having children is becoming less of a risk I’m willing to take. Coupled with the resources and opportunities that the US provides, my hypothetical children likely wouldn’t be among the worst-affected by climate change. Under today’s environmental and political climate, I find it is better to regret not having children than regret having them.

Most days, Athena Frederick goes grocery shopping and picks up her grandson from school without ever getting into a car. The same is true of her teenage daughter, who takes herself to and from high school. That’s possible because she lives in Peachtree City, Ga., a small town just south of Atlanta that started building a network of paths in 1974 that are accessible to golf carts, but not cars. It now extends more than 100 miles, serving 38,000 residents and their more than 11,000 registered carts. Nearly every destination and domicile in the town is accessible via a class of vehicle most Americans regard as a toy.

Low-cost EV maker e.GO eyes European, US expansion
  + stars: | 2023-10-20 | by ( Nick Carey | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Aachen-based e.GO's microfactories cost around $60 million to build, are highly automated and can make around 30,000 EVs annually, Vezvaei said. The company is going public via a merger with special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) Athena Consumer Acquisition , which will value the EV maker at around $900 million, plus raise $235 million in cash and $50 million in debt financing. The EV maker currently makes the e.Wave X, a small four-seater EV for 24,990 euros ($26,457) at its plant in Aachen. The company's listing comes a few years after a major wave of SPAC mergers where EV startups raised billions of dollars. "This is not yet just another EV company, but a company that actually makes cars," she said.

Visitors can now pinch and zoom their way around the ancient Greek site, with a digital overlay showing how it once looked. Other, less widely known features also appear: Many of the sculptures on the Acropolis were painted in striking colors. Tech giant like Meta and Apple are pushing into VR headsets that can cost thousands of dollars. “Accessibility is extending to the digital space,” Mendoni said at a preview launch event for the Chronos app in May. “Real visitors and virtual visitors anywhere around the world can share historical knowledge.”Developed by Greek telecoms provider Cosmote, the free app's designers say they hope to build on existing features that include an artificial intelligence-powered virtual guide, Clio.

Finger’s only child was a son, Fred Finger, who was gay and died in 1992 at age 43 of AIDS complications. But Nobleman discovered Fred Finger had a daughter, Athena Finger. But she said it led to questions from students, meaning Nobleman and students might discuss sexuality without parents being warned. CNN —Greece has announced that it will limit the number of daily visitors to the Acropolis in order to guarantee the safety and longevity of the ancient monument. From September, the UNESCO World Heritage site in Athens will admit no more than 20,000 visitors a day, according to the country’s culture minister, Lina Mendoni. “That creates unpleasant conditions for the site, the visitors and the staff who are trying to accommodate this high volume of people,” she added. Mendoni said that the measure will allow the government to protect the monument and enhance the overall experience for visitors. From April 1, the new system will also apply to other archaeological sites that operate with electronic tickets, accounting for 90-95% of visitors to Greek sites.

The community land trust model was largely used in rural communities until the 1980s, when Cincinnati became the first city to have a land trust operate in an urban neighborhood. In 1984, Senator Sanders, who was then the mayor of Burlington, created one to help address his city’s housing crisis. In 2020, the East Harlem El Barrio community land trust bought four apartment buildings that had fallen into disrepair from the city for one dollar each. Around the country, activists have also used community land trusts in nontraditional ways. Steve King, the executive director of the Oakland Community Land Trust, said California has seen its number of land trusts double in the last few years.
